White collar crime can be defined as any commercial-based crime, such as bribery, fraud, corruption, intellectual property infringement, accounting fraud where statements are manipulated, or money laundering. PricewaterhouseCoopers’ economic crime survey, issued on October 2007, stated that 72% of South African companies are or have been affected by white-collar crime. While white-collar crime has decreased since then, South Africa remains high above the global average of 42%. The survey found that 69% of fraud is actually committed internally.
